The Heart of the Siwani Brand

Siwani Spirits is more than a name on a bottle; it is the convergence of two great American stories. It’s a narrative woven from the golden rice fields of the South Carolina Lowcountry and the vibrant, jazz-filled streets of Black Broadway in the North. It is a profound respect for the Gullah Geechee people who shaped our nation’s palate, and a tribute to the ambition of those who journeyed north during the Great Migration.
We craft our spirits to honor a complete history: a story of southern soil and northern glamour, of resilience and artistry. This is the story of two families, united through heritage and culture, and distilled into a spirit that embodies the soul of its origins. Welcome to the heart of Siwani.
The Golden Seed and Its Keepers
Our story begins where so much of Gullah Geechee history does: with Carolina Gold rice. Once the "Golden Seed," this legendary grain was the engine of an empire, cultivated by the skilled hands and agricultural genius of the West and Central African people who would become the Gullah Geechee. Their mastery turned the coastal plains into a source of immense wealth, yet their own stories were often left untold. This history is the bedrock of our brand.
A Grandfather's Legacy: The Southern Root

Every story has its heroes. On my father's side, one such hero is Thomas “Clue” Gregory, a Geechee man of boundless talent and quiet determination whose family hailed from the Ridgeland and Hardeeville areas of South Carolina. His life was a masterclass in self-sufficiency; a WWII veteran, fruit brandy maker, and carpenter whose spirit was deeply connected to that Lowcountry mindset. His words, encouraging me to work for myself, ring continuously in my mind as I build this brand. He represents the resourceful, proud, and deeply rooted southern heritage that is the foundation of our spirit. Learn more about Clue and his influence here.
A Journey North: The Birth of an Aesthetic

On my mother's side, our story joins the Great Migration, but with a vibrant local flavor. It follows the journey of my great-grandfather, Sidney Swann, from rural Maryland to the electric avenues of Washington, D.C. A man of impeccable style and ambition, Sidney embodied the "northern glamour" that defines our aesthetic. He was a barber by trade and a master distiller in his own right, running a still in the basement of his home on E Street. He was a sharp dresser who built a new life while carrying the legacy of entrepreneurship and service with him. The name Siwani itself is a tribute to the Swanns. Siwani means "swan" in Yoruba, a language rooted in the West African country of Nigeria. Siwani is a reclamation of of culture, identity, and legacy.

His story is powerfully complemented by that of his mother, Emma Swann. A "Wesort"
woman from rural Southern Maryland, Emma was a trailblazer who owned and operated her own speakeasy. She represents the courage, independence, and entrepreneurial spirit that has run through our family for generations. It is their combined legacy—Emma's formidable business acumen in Southern Maryland and Sidney's stylish ambition in D.C.—that plants our flag firmly in the region and infuses our brand with its unique, sophisticated energy.
Crafting a Spirit from a Complete History
Our commitment to authenticity is absolute. The rice in our spirit is sourced directly from the historic sea islands of South Carolina, honoring the Gullah Geechee legacy of Thomas “Clue” Gregory. And the spirit itself - the polished, elegant, and confident experience in the bottle - is crafted in Maryland, a nod to the northern ambition of Sidney Swann.

It is the fusion of these two worlds: the southern juke joint meets northern glamour.
The production is a blend of tradition and innovation, resulting in a complex and unforgettable experience. It greets you with distinct herbal aromas, which evolve on the palate into rich notes of buttered rice and gooey marshmallow. This is the taste of a full and personal story, a
complete history, distilled.
A Commitment Beyond the Bottle
Our mission honors every part of our story. We are deeply committed to the preservation and empowerment of the Gullah Geechee communities, dedicating a portion of our proceeds to initiatives that protect their land and cultural traditions. But we are also a testament to the power of migration, ambition, and the creation of new legacies in new cities.
When you choose Siwani Spirits, you are not just enjoying a premium product; you are becoming a partner in celebrating a rich, multifaceted American story.
